Enjoying the “dog days”

Posted by Pat on July 19, 2026 in Uncategorized |

It’s summer time (and the living is supposed to be easy!)

Sometimes we complain about how warm it can get here in the valley! But we do know that it is the “dog days” of summer!

From July 3 through August 11 is traditionally considered to be the hottest and most sultry weather of our year.

Our lethargic and lazy feelings are historically validated by the ancient Egyptians and Romans, as they marked that the dog star Sirius in the constellation Canis Major AND the sun were both heating things up at the same time!

It’s just the part of the normal cycle that we forgot about temporarily this last winter. The ebb and flow of activities, emotions, ideas, decision are all just part of our summer shift in energy. It’s natural! It’s even healthy!

Let’s give ourselves permission to enjoy it! I have! After all, it is the best way to be in the moment (which is the best time to be in!)

I love this verbal picture from the author Natalie Babbitt in her book Tuck Everlasting about this time of year:

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color..”

So…if you are being bugged by your

  • to-do list that is still undone,
  • an urge for distractions, any distractions, or
  • chatterbox voice in your head that’s berating you for any of the above,

then just kick back and take a lesson from one of these reminders!😊

So what are you doing to enjoy this gift of the season, this warm and relaxing time of year before time moves on to fall?
