What do we really mean?

Posted by Pat on August 16, 2026 in Uncategorized |

Sometimes I wonder why we say some of the words or phrases we do even though they sound ridiculous.

Yet most everyone understands our meaning and intentions!

As an ex/English teacher of course I really do know that it’s fun and creative and even humorous.

After all, I’ve been fit as a fiddle, have blown my top, and even been in a pickle!

(I’ve even paid an arm and a leg for something!)

But sometimes it would be smarter to choose my words more carefully, rather than try to be humorous. I remember a number of decades ago that I said I wanted to be debt free in the worst possible way. What I meant was I wanted it very intensely. But I got debt free in the worst possible way by going through a bankruptcy!

I might have been smarter to have paid attention to the feelings and the energy those words created and shifted my language to that which could have empowered me. (Maybe “I’m really committed to finding the best possible way to improve my financial situation”)…?

Now I’m older and wiser. I now have wisdom enough to know that my thoughts and words are creative and powerful and to choose them much more carefully!

I imagine that I’m not the only one who has been cavalier in my word choices and regretted it. I know that “foot in mouth disease” seems to be rampant, at least online!

I’d love to know that I’m not alone just in case you’d be willing to share an experience of yours!
