Make a list?
There’s a story that says…
Once upon a time, a man was walking down a road. At first, the places were known to him but became less and less familiar. Finally, he knew he was in a new place and was lost.
The traveler kept walking until he was at the foot of a stee
p hill. He was too tired to continue. He sat down to rest and was inspired to take a pad and pencil from his pack.
He wrote two lists.
The first was “Things I Know Are Absolutely True”:
- I have been lost before.
- I have always found my way.
- I am a strong walker.
- This road was built to go somewhere.
The second list was “Things I Know Are Possible”:
- I could see better from the top of this hill.
- I could find signposts, people and houses on the other side.
- I could find shelter, food and friends on the other side.
- I could like this new place.
His words gave him strength and he climbed the hill. He did see better from the top. He found signposts, people and houses. In fact, he found most of the things on his lists. Plus a few extras.
If you are feeling lost and discouraged, make two lists. On the first, list the best things in the present situation. The second list is to expand your thinking. Write all the best things you believe are possible.
And then let your words give you courage on your journey to places yet unseen!

Divine discontent happens when something new beckons, and you are hesitating. You are trying to find satisfaction in a world that’s too small for you. You want to stay there because it’s familiar, and yet it no longer serves you. It’s like a chick in an egg. First, it’s comforting, and then, as the chick […]

From the lives of children come many of life’s inspirations! One such story that has touched my heart is that of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was diagnosed just before her first birthday with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer. In 2000, just after turning 4 years old, she informed her mother she wanted to start […]

Perhaps I’ve chosen an unusual symbol. But hey, folks have often said that I come up with an unusual take on things. So here it is: Versatility is a good thing. I want to be versatile. Ducks are versatile. “What’s that you say?” Yeah…I know it’s quirky. But ducks are adapted to the 3 […]

In clearing out some old files, I found this fascinating list in an old Toastmasters’ newsletter that I thought you might find thought-provoking too! Here’s just a few from the list: The Imagination List What color is today? What does happiness look like? What does your self-image sound like? What is the weight of […]

The best laid schemes o’mice and men often go astray. Robert Burns 1759-1796 With the maze as a metaphor for your life, you can examine what choices you have made. Whether the maze you find yourself in is self-made or not, it is one that no doubt has contained a number of false starts, […]

Here’s a lesson I learned from my childhood … As I get older, I find myself looking backwards in time for inspiration and lessons from stories, from songs, from clichés to make my life more fun and more meaningful. (Maybe it comes from having been a teacher? from owning a bookstore?) Anyway, here’s my take on the childhood song […]

When someone asks you how you are, do you answer in one of the following three ways? I’m good! I’m fine. Ohhh, busy! What do those three words really mean anyway? Not much in this context! They’re often just meaningless, but polite, space fillers. Imagine eliminating those three words. What would you say instead? How […]

We are all connected and what we say and do affects others, just as a pebble tossed into the pond sends out ripples to the shore. This Valentine’s season we can reach out with compassion and kindness and that, too, will ripple out and affect others. After all these years (I can’t believe it’s been […]

Do you agree that your today can be awesome? Here’s my four reasons: 1. THIS IS THE ONLY DAY THAT EXISTS Everything in your life so far actually happened in the present, in the here and now. Likewise everything that will happen in the future will also end up happening in the present. Most […]
