It’s my day; is it yours?

This Saturday, August 13, is officially International Left Handers Day. And I’m part of the 7-10% of the population that is left-handed. (as was my dad, my son, and my husband!)

I’ve always said I wanted to be in the top 10% of whatever I was doing and, here, (by genetics at least!) I’m in the top 10%.

Of course my assumption is that left handed folks like me are ahead of the rest of the folks because we

• had to overcome the original belief that we were “wrong”
• had to be taught to use our “other” hand, and
• had to be creative in adjusting to what we couldn’t change.

There certainly are some inconveniences living in a predominantly right-handed world. We have had to learn to do “workarounds” or just do things awkwardly!

(And a can opener can be the biggest problem.)

But it is nice to know that I don’t have “2 left feet” and that I don’t have to accept, like (or give!) a left handed compliment!

We lefties are in good company…

The ranks of left handers include such luminaries as Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Bill Gates, Jimi Hendrix,  Oprah Winfrey, as well as  Napoleon, Prince William, several presidents, and… (maybe even you?)

And for all you right-handed folks, well you also are in good company with the 90%+/- of the rest of the folks!

So this Saturday is a day to celebrate one of our differences.

But it is such a minor difference!

We are really all much more alike than different.

We should be using all the other days to celebrate our similarities, our ONENESS!

And I really think since we tend to have two hands, that this quote from Billy Graham is a great reminder!

We’re all part of the same family and we’ve all been blessed with the ability to both receive and to give love, peace, time, prosperity.

So let’s do it!
