Both the dark and the light…
Last Sunday we changed our clocks to begin Daylight Saving Time. We seem to have gotten used to wanting more light sooner and so we artificially “Spring Forward” yearly to get an “extra” hour of sunlight!
And now this coming Friday (March 20) we celebrate the first day of Spring (the vernal equinox), that point in our year when the day length is more or less equal to the length of the night.
In Genesis, the author informs us that creation was balanced with both the dark and the light. And…once the balance had occurred, there was order and…they both were called “good.”

This yin and yang symbol also shows the balance in life. The light and the dark are neither good nor bad, they just are.
The darkness has held so many hidden wonders. In the blackness of the night we can see the stars and study the heavens.
- In the darkness of the womb, human life is conceived and nurtured.
- in the darkness of the soil, seeds germinate.
- In the darkness of the mind, ideas are born.
- Darkness is nature’s time of rest, formation, incubation. (And so too, the darkness of winter can have been our personal time of rest, formation and incubation as well).
Let’s welcome both the dark and the light in their seasons, metaphorically and metaphysically. They are a gift to us.
