What can we learn from all this?
Are we learning anything from this time of Covid and it’s resulting changes in our lives? I hope we are!
I’m reminded of the fun little poem by Portia Nelson titled Autobiography in Five Short Chapters. It’s a delight and even has a message for us!
- Chapter 1 I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It’s isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.
- Chapter 2 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I’m in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.
- Chapter 3 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.
- Chapter 4 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.
- Chapter 5 I walk down a different street.
Remind you of the movie Groundhog Day?
I do know that someone once said…
And we know that our habits are just that…habitual! We always have the option of choosing new ones. Even though it may take us some time to move on from the “holes” in our life experience, we can do it.
We can ask ourselves some pertinent questions: Why…
- Why do we keep making the same choices?
- Why don’t we just walk down a different street?
- Is it just that it seems too simple?
- Or is it just too hard?
What will we do to make this next year different from the last one? How can we adapt, adjust, survive, thrive? What choices will we make? It doesn’t have to be the same!
