The second “New Year” of the year
It’s September, so Happy New Year!
( Of course I really do know the New Year starts on January 1st!)
But for people who spend the months from June to August enjoying the lazy days of summer,
then September really is the New Year.
- It is the time of year when the kids go back to school. Yes!
- It is the time of year when lightweight summer wardrobes are switched out for those cozy fall sweaters.
- It is the time of year when the leaves turn crimson and the transition to a new season is evident all around us.
This all leads to a feeling of change, a time of renewal, and that energy that comes after a long vacation. This energy is the kind that can propel new ideas forward. It is also a time when we are hungry for connection. We’re excited and want to share that excitement with our family, friends and co-workers. Even the youngsters are glad to get back to school to connect with friends, both old and new.
The more measured pace of autumn also brings with it a reflective state of mind in which we can look back and evaluate our progress, and make course corrections on our path.
Perhaps as a holdover from all those years of schools, September marks the start of the ‘second new year’ of the year, an opportunity for one final push before the pregnant silence of winter descends.
It’s when the natural cycle of life begins again, interestingly,
- with slowing down,
- reflection and winter dormancy,
- enabling rebirth and renewal in spring.
There’s something invigorating about this time of year, though.
Coinciding with bringing in the final harvest, the fruits of our labors have been gathered. It’s over. We can’t grow more now…we have reaped what we’ve sown. It’s now time to reflect and plan how to do it better next year, for a more bountiful harvest in every aspect of our lives.
What…
plans are you bringing to closure?
objects and activities are you letting go?
gifts has this year brought to you so far?
do you want to complete by January?
Join me on these grey and windy days. They encourage my inclination to slow down and reflect, but, as either Satchel Paige (OR Winnie the Pooh!) said
and sometimes I just sits.”

September is always a time of renewal for me, my birth month. And this month there has been more times of reflection, of looking back, hungry for old connections, sharing excitement with friends – – – I just returned home from my 50th class reunion ( we old folks graduated in 1963 ). It was great to see friends I went to school with for most of those 12 years – some not seen since we graduated. We wore picture name tags ( our young pictures ) so we could figure out who was who. Both those old connections and stories told when we looked back when we were in school were very special.
Here is a toast to old folks who figured things out and had special visits and listened to 60’s music !!
Earl, congratulations on your birthday! I love the concepts of renewal, rebirth, remember. They add to the joy of today
Stirred up more appreciation for the “Man” all over the place. A good stir, Pat.
George, I do so love “stirring things up!” Thanks for being there.
