The power of just one word…
Sometimes it is critical to add words to our communication – specifically to add one word to a statement or question which dramtically changes its impact and import.
For example…the word “yet.” Think how often we say things relating to what we have not achieved or where things are not as we want them to be. They usually sound like this:
- My relationship is not where I want it to be.
- My business is not where I want it to be.
- I don’t have the money I need to buy a house.
You get the point – it’s easy to talk about what we don’t have, and it can be discouraging. But look what happens when you add the word “yet.”
- My relationship is not where I want it to be yet.
- My business in not where I want it to be yet.
- I don’t have the money I need to buy a house yet.
By adding this one word, we can turn the statement from one of lack and disappointment to one of possibilities and motivation. Certainly we’ll need to shift our perspectives and take different actions to achieve different outcomes, but adding the word yet can be the spark to move us into change.
It can enhance our choices, awareness, effectiveness and impact in every aspect of our life. Just one word at a time!
Once we realize that we can get good at anything that we’re willing to put the time into, we find we can move from a sense of less than to one of control. We can decide to get good whenever we want.
So let’s not focus on what we’re not good at today, on where we are not at yet. We can choose to focus on what we need to do to get good at mastering the skill we’re missing.
What have YOU not done YET?
