Stop signs, yield signs, dead-ends

a god's plan

It’s said that if you want to make God laugh, just tell him/her your plans!

How many times have you neglected to pay attention to the signs that come up as you try to follow your plans and drive the vehicle called “Your Life?”

It’s a good thing that life is really all about our journey, not our destination. Because the way is rarely a straight line. Life has a way of messing with our geometry!

We do have tools for our journey though: signs, GPS, maps.

Stop signs are decision points at crossroads. We get to stop, look, listen (in all directions!) and then choose.

Yield signs tell us to be alert, look, wait if necessary, and proceed on our right path.

Dead-ends tell us to stop, turn around, and go back and re-choose our path.

GPS adjusts by “recalculating the route.”

And common sense tells us that if the map doesn’t agree with the ground, the map is what’s wrong.

And what about those round-abouts? They give us time to reconsider where we want to go while we’re going in circles!

Have you ever read this poem by Portia Nelson? I think it has a message for us as we travel on our life journey! What do you think?

 “Autobiography in Five Short Chapters”

Chapter 1: I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost…I am helpless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’ts see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I’m in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in…It’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter 4: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Chapter 5: I walk down a different street.

What have been the greatest “signs” along YOUR journey?

Many detours just relax and go with it.

Barbara, sometimes it just amazes me how many detours there seem to have been when I look back. Maybe the detours ARE necessary for the journey. And your advice to relax and go with it seems really sensible!

I have observed in my travels that I always get “lost” even though I have a map. But the amazing thing is that I always get “found” eventually and continue on my way.

Mary Kay, how true! And even in “real” travel adventures, we always seem to get found. My sister and I got “lost” in Venice after dark and had a heck of a time getting ourselves “found.” So too in real life!
