Life is like Monopoly
Even the way we play the game Monopoly could be symbolic of life. First of all, we are going around a board. So…basically going around in circles. Life is a cycle.
And the most powerful move in Monopoly/life isn’t mentioned in the rulebook.
It’s the moment we realize it’s all just a game!
- the money’s made up,
- the lines on the board are made up.
- and our identity’s made up.
It’s all made up! And we’ve chosen to play it.
That was my first “aha!”
Are we all just playing one big game of Monopoly? Can we wake up and realize that we are free to play it however we like?
Have we been using excuses as to why we don’t choose to play it differently?
When we are asked why don’t we just jump on a plane and move somewhere nice, do we say “I can’t, I have bills, I have a boss, I have family and friends here, I don’t have enough reserves…? or…
And, most importantly, we find that it all goes back in the box. All those houses and hotels. All the railroads and utility companies. All that property and all that wonderful money. Everything we “win” is just on loan. Now, it all goes back in the box.
And this is my second “Aha!”
None of it was really ours. We got all heated up about it for a while, but it all was around a long time before we sat down at the board, and it will be here after we’re gone.
It all goes back in the box.
