It’s simple AND hard…

Posted by Pat on March 3, 2019 in Uncategorized |

Many things are both simple and hard! This dichotomy of “simple” and “hard” exists with many of the most common things that we want to do to improve ourselves.

We humans are predisposed to favor the short term over the long term. Our modern life surrounds us with seemingly infinite temptation that is more easily available than ever before.

Change requires us to take action to change our behavior, whereas staying in the same place requires nothing from us.

It’s not rocket science to know what to do. The challenge comes from actually applying it to our lives and doing it.

Personal finance is simple. Spend less than you earn. It’s also hard. We’re surrounded by seemingly infinite temptation.

Losing weight  is simple. Eat fewer calories. It’s also hard. We’re surrounded by seemingly infinite temptation.

Getting into shape is simple. Move around more and work up a sweat. We’re surrounded by seemingly infinite temptation.

Improving personal relationships is simple. Devote more time to that person and really listen to them. We’re surrounded by seemingly infinite temptation.

Acquiring more skills for success is simple. Devote time to study and practice those specific skills. We’re surrounded by seemingly infinite temptation.

So…here’s an anti-procrastination hack formula!

The formula for taking action is simple: We just ask ourselves “Can I just (insert micro-commitment here).

A micro-commitment is something so small and simple that we can readily say “yes” to doing it even if we have very little willpower.

If I’ve been procrastinating about cleaning my apartment, I can ask, Can I take just two minutes to clean up the kitchen counter?

At first glance, it may seem like that wouldn’t accomplish muchbut I usually notice an internal shift when I step into action. And it’s quite possible that I may find myself thinking I’ve already started so I may as well keep going for a little longer.

Why don’t you pick just one thing you’ve been procrastinating about and then implement a micro-commitment that will give you momentum? You can watch what  happens as your seemingly small successes generate progress!

As usual you’re pretty much spot on, Pat! So today I finally began (only just, though) my tax stuff. A beginning, a first small step.

Pat, I think you know me too well!
As it happens, this tiny step method is one I’ve be pursuing for awhile. The first order of business for me, of course, is an affirmation, repeated 20 times, for example “every day in every way I”m getting

Meg, an affirmation I also like is
