It’s hard for me to believe, but…
It’s hard for me to believe, but…
there are people who don’t read,
who don’t like to read!
Back in 2014 I wrote a blog post, “Calling all Bookworms” and I still hate the statistics that I shared then and again in 2015. I looked them up again…and have updated them here.
As a former English teacher and owner of a bookstore, I may be prejudiced but…these newer statistics are just as unnerving as those earlier ones!
Today, April 23, is (drumroll!)
World Book Day.
(and by book, I mean not just paper but also Kindle, I-Pad, smart phone, computer, and who knows what else!)
In honor of the occasion, I’d like to share some of my favorite thoughts about books and reading.
And, I would love to know
- what you think,
- what you find important,
- what you find amusing (or horrifying)!
So enjoy these!
Reading is such a gift,
- for learning,
- for entertainment, and
- for enlightenment.
And if you are like me, you probably relate to this next one!
And don’t you love this description by Carl Sagan of what a book is?
And combining my passion for books with my passion for chocolate is probably no surprise to those of you who know me, so here’s my final image:
So…now share YOUR feelings about books and reading!

Let’s hear it for BOOKS! Carl Sagan’s take on what a book is just nails it. And at my house ‘cleaning’ and ‘books’ do not seem to live in the same universe….my personal universe has lots of books (and yarn, and music) but hardly anything remotely like ‘cleaning’. It’s interesting to me that so many folks just have no interest in reading…..hard to understand. There’s a joy in discovering something new. And a different joy in rereading a much-loved book.
I just packed up 10 boxes of books (am moving to CA soon) and that was just from the downstairs rooms, my “library” is upstairs. I don’t know how many boxes there will be up there. I love my books and I love to read.
I love to read and am looking forward to reading some of the books on the list! Everyone in our family really enjoys it. My four year old can already read. When you start them young, they love it forever! Thanks Pat!
I can relate to Joy’s experience of packing up a huge collection of books. I have many books which I have hauled around for years and am tired of it, especially since a lot of them are in storage cause I am in a small apt. So I am currently going through them and donating a lot of them. It’s very painful but maybe my doctor has a pill for that.
Mary Kay, Dee Dee, Joy and Fay! Thanks so much for sharing. This is a topic dear to all our hearts and I know I’ll always want to read more!
I still remember the stories from books I read as a child. To this day I still get restless without a good book to read.
Ken, it’s difficult to imagine what our lives would be with books. I feel sorry for those who have not discovered this pleasure!
