Is the dark unappreciated?

Posted by Pat on March 12, 2017 in Uncategorized |

Dark is just not appreciated enough!

Light and dark clothes?

We don’t fear the “dark” when sorting the laundry!

Dark is not bad!

In Genesis, the author informs us that  creation was balanced with both the dark and the light.

And…once the balance had occurred, there was order and…

they both were called “good.”

We, however, often attach concepts of evil, disaster, sorrow, blindness to the state of darkness. (whether metaphorically or metaphysically!) And so we are afraid of it.

But darkness represents so much more that that negative stuff.

And the darkness holds many hidden wonders!

In the blackness of the night, we can see the stars and study the heavens.

In the darkness of the womb, human life is conceived and nurtured.

In the darkness of the soil, seeds germinate.

In the darkness of the mind, ideas are born.

Darkness is nature’s time of rest, formation, incubation.

And so too, the darkness of winter can be our personal time of rest, formation and incubation as well!

We are used to wanting more light sooner and so we artificially “Spring Forward” yearly to get an “extra” hour of sunlight. (as we change our clocks today!)

And no doubt you have seen the following image that just makes us wonder what we are thinking!

Not good nor bad, the dark just is. As is the light. And so we welcome both in their season, metaphorically and metaphysically.

I love the concept of balance found in the yin and yang symbol!

What do YOU think?

The balancing act seems like a lovely contrast – we can feel each more intently after experiencing the other for a while. Still….sometimes one or the other stays a tad too long for comfort or my liking and I get restive longing for the change to happen a bit sooner. The daylight ‘saving’ system does nothing to help this.

I think you are awesome. Love the light and appreciate the dark. We have had a wonderful winter for introspection, so now time for the light and the love to shine, shine, shine.

Onyx, Ebony , Jet, If you look at rocks you see all colors. If you look at the sky you see all colors. Day and night, birds and fish and horses and dogs and people. God likes color. Black is beauty as well as all the others. Darkness was made for rest, regeneration and recuperation. Without night we would not appreciate day.

Wonderful choice of words for black! And your point is well taken that all colors can even be seen in the sky-just remembering some spectacular sunsets and sunrises brings a smile to my heart.

The concept tells us that we need both yin and yang for balance. They do not contradict each other but are complementary and one cannot exist without the other. Most people don’t know that the original colors for yin and yang are black and red. Red for fire, the sun and black for water and the moon. Also, nature will not allow one aspect to go on indefinitely. If yang does not yield to yin or vice versa, it will eventually collapse and turn into the opposite. I think the current rains in CA after a long drought is a good example.
Personally, I love the dark times. It is a time for turning inward and resting, reflection.
Just to be picky, we do not get an extra hour of sunlight by changing the clock.
