How can I shift?
As I’ve gotten older (and maybe somewhat wiser), I’m shifting what I tell myself… a bit away from just being productive and more towards creativity. Here’s what I can tell myself:
- Rather than complaining and saying “Look at everything on my list!” I can ask myself “What can I remove from my list (or just do!) in order to give me more time to relax?”
- Rather than just looking for ways to organize my time so I can do more, I could look for ways for me to be more engaged and focused on doing what I am doing right now.
- Rather than dreading what I need to do today, I could ask “How can I create a way to do these tasks in a manner that feels joyful, creative, easy and worth my energy?” After all, I do only have a finite amount of energy!
Being productive isn’t all bad. It certainly has its place and made sense for much of my life. After all, I do have to operate in the world of schedules and deadlines. I still have to tend to the practical tasks of living.
But I no longer have to squish and mush as much activity and accomplishment in a day as I possibly can. There’s something to be said for being retired, even if only partially.
But…I could have slowed down sooner. You know, stopped to smell the roses!

Pat,
Great blog! It is so very true that being selective about what needs to be done and doing it, makes you feel happily productive.
Love and light,
