Earth Hums Just Like We Do!
Scientists say that our planet generates a constant, deep thrum of noise. Not just noise, but rather a kind of music-“huge, swirling loops of sound” that are so low they can’t be heard by most human ears.
But apparently, as of 1998, we have sensitive equipment that is getting better at picking up what the scientists have named “Earth’s hum.” This hum is the result of the constant expansion and contraction of the earth.
Science tells us that the earth vibrates at a frequency of eight hertz. And when we walk in natural areas, our bodies resonate with and absorb this virbrational energy, which provides a feeling of harmony and relaxation.
Isn’t life a wonder?
I like to imagine the mystery of our Earth humming to itself, singing a deep harmonic that resonates in our rib cages and hearts even though our ears may hear nothing.
Well, nothing but…
- the roar of the ocean,
- the vibration of the wind,
- the sparkling notes of songbirds,
- the patter of rain on leaves or
- the strangeness of the silence in the desert!

I miss the sounds from the midwest: whip-poor-will, bob-white, cicadas. It’s very hard living in an urban area. I read recently that silence is not no sound but actually the peace of the sounds of nature.
Gaia breathing. Humming is a cool way to look at it, too.
This is a great post! I need to check out Gaia breathing too.
